The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) tested hundreds of tubes of lipsticks and the results were unbelievable; 400 of them had traces of Lead, and several brands including L'oreal, Maybeline, and Covergirl contained the highest levels!
Lead is a known chemical said to be so toxic that according to the Daily Green (an online Green Consumer Guide) "it isn't {even}allowed in paint or gasoline." Although the doses found in these lipsticks is fairly low since lipstick is not something we consume (it's just applied), it is still a little bit nerve-racking and definitely something to think about next time you pick one up.
Below are the top 10 lipsticks with the highest lead amounts (very scary considering majority of them are affordable drugstore lipsticks):

I do firmly believe that the cosmetic industry needs to set limits and possibly find some alternative methods to creating and developing lipsticks without the use of Lead. The good news is that according to the Daily Green there are lipticks out there that are completely lead free, I picked out a few from the list, which are affordable drugstore lipsticks (listed below) that were tested for lead and no traces were found:

What do you think about all this? Are you being more cautious as to which lipsticks you are purchasing? Do you believe that the traces of Lead are so minimal that it wont affects us women in the long term?

Interesting for sure. So, it isn't the entire line, but certain colors? I don't wear any of those colors, but will def. watch out for other shades.

I think I'm the only one not concerned about this. I have read the FDA report and the levels of lead are so low even in the highest lipsticks on the list, that you would basically have to eat several tubes a day to encounter a detrimental effect. It is good that people are discussing these issues, and many people don't want to be anywhere near the stuff which is understandable, but the levels aren't dangerous.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the article! Def good to know.

@thelaqcqueredlady thanks for your thoughts, i agree with you that yes the levels are very minimal, but i think women need to realize what kind of chemicals are found in beauty products! I bet you majority of people didn't even know lead existed in lipsticks!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness that's so scary! Thanks for letting us know though! Hopefully the beauty industry will be more cautious about this.

Thank you for following dear, I'm following you back now ^^
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this... It's quite useful. I think no matter the lead amounts, if you keep using it, it builds up and could be harmful.
